What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 023

9.20.15 Dinner

The dining hall is closed on Sunday nights, so students are on their own for dinner. There are some pretty good restaurants in town and couple of campus coffee shops/eateries. Of course there's also the fridge in Mr. Z's room.

6:09 PM
MR. Z.: Not sure if I'll be having anything other than Easy Mac, I don't know what the food situation is tonight.

6:35 PM
MR. Z.: Even better than Easy Mac...

This meal's color palette:

Pizza rolls and chocolate milk. Basically his favorite meal from age 7 until... well, now. I always hated making those things for him. You'd have to cook them in the toaster oven for about 4 and a half minutes and then flip them, burning off your finger tips, and then watch them like a hawk for the next few minutes because if you looked away for even a split second, they'd burst and all the cheese and tomato sauce would ooze out of them. Then you'd basically be left with an empty pizza satchel and you'd have to surreptitiously stuff the innards back inside them before serving them. And Mr. Z would always know when they popped and he'd be all bummed out, "Aw, they popped?! Man!" Somehow, his didn't seem to pop in the above picture. Either he somehow cracked the cooking code for those fuckers or, more likely, he didn't cook them at all and he's eating them frozen.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 022

9.17.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: I'm pretty sure what I ate for dinner was literally the exact same meal as usual (pizza, chicken, a salad that was extra big this time -- still no Dijon dressing, though, so I've been using the sub-par French dressing), so it's not worth your time. Here's lunch. They advertised these as "French bread pizzas," but I think they were hamburger buns and they weren't even crispy -- just kind of soft and moist. Also, there was no ketchup, so I had naked fries and they were pretty flavorless.
HOWEVER.
The turkey sandwich depicted here is probably the single best sandwich I've ever made. The turkey, cheese, lettuce and mustard were all distributed so evenly and satisfyingly that it more than made up for everything else. It was beautiful.

This meal's color palette:

Ah, the ol' "pass-off-yesterday's-buns-as-today's-French-bread-pizzas" trick. Classic chef switcheroo. The only thing French about those lethargic loaves is that they look a little like berets and they probably smoke and don't shave their armpits. I'm glad he's upping the ante with his sandwich-making skills -- that'll definitely come in handy when he's job-hunting after graduation. I'm not sure if that's a glass of ginger ale, apple juice, a pale ale or a urine sample. If it's a urine sample, Mr. Z, you're dehydrated and need to start chugging some water. I'm hoping it's apple juice, though, which will be a great liquid locomotive to help pull that carb-oose into the train depoot.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 020 and 021

9.16.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: Was not in the mood for pizza, since I downed a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch in my dorm a bit prior, so I got tons of sandwich action (the grilled cheese had tomato in it, which tasted like ketchup, so that's kind of weird) and, of course, some tots.

This meal's color palette:

Not in the mood for pizza?! I didn't think this day would come until second semester of junior year at the earliest. Although I think the double sandwich and the tots more than make up for any damage the pizza might have done. I've seen that color palette so many times now -- it really does look like the car color offerings from a 1981 Chevy Cavalier catalog. "Drive home today in a brand new Chevrolet Cavalier in any of our exciting new colors: Ketchup, Primer, 'Rrhea, Chalk or Ace Bandage!"

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 018 and 019

9.15.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: Some REALLY good pizza with tomatoes and basil, and then some good pasta with good sauce, and a really good sandwich with some random greens and hummus. Overall, today's lunch was... well, really good.

This meal's color palette:

Good... grief. Hopefully, the chef will learn to combine the pizza and pasta into a pastizza so Mr. Z will have some room on the plate for something new. What, you ask? Oh, I don't know... perhaps we should check the MENU!

That's right -- I hunted down today's lunch menu. Look at these overlooked delicacies: four savory soups, a Greek salad, and that artichoke/pepper/chickpea tagine looks delicious! I do love that the last selection is labeled "comfort food." For future reference, pizza, pasta and chorizo hash are not comfort food. Stewed chicken is. Maybe the chef shaped it into a tiny couch.

A Short Story from Miss O

Mr. Z informed me that his dinner was pretty boring tonight so I thought I'd share a quick conversation we had with Miss O during our dinner. To set the stage, she was telling us about the ridiculously titled and conceived assembly she had at school today called, "Be Excellent Day." It's a day of pep rallies, short films, music and motivational speakers. Mr. Z had suffered through four "Be Excellent Day"s and now it was Miss O's turn...

MISS O.: This one guy from MSU gave a speech and he was a total douche.

ME: Who was he?

MISS O.: I don't know... I think he was a coach of something. Who's that one coach?

ME: (thinking) Uh... the football coach? Mark Dantonio?

MISS O.: No, I think he was a basketball coach.

ME: It wasn't Tom Izzo, was it?

MISS O.: Yeah, that was him. All he talked about was sports. He was saying "follow your dreams" but he was really just saying "follow your dreams only if it has to do with sports." Total douche.

I love that Miss O thinks that the longest tenured coach in the Big Ten and one of the most successful college coaches is a total douche. I'm sure he is but you don't even think such things in these parts. I just hope no one in this town reads this blog or our days will be seriously numbered.

Go green, go white?

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 017

9.14.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: Does Commons want me to die?

ME: OMG. Tater tot pizza?!?!

MR. Z.: I know, isn't that amazing! There isn't any left, though, which is probably God's way of sparing me.

ME: You dodged a serious bullet.

MR. Z.: I'll probably wait for a while and get some.

ME: Your colon hates you.

Lunch didn't end there, however...

MR. Z.: Okay, Pasta, chicken and salad. Seems like a nice meal, right? (Other than the fact that the ranch dressing was fucking disgusting).

This meal's color palette:

I think we've all seen that set of swatches before, haven't we? But I saw the little "typing" animation in our IM conversation and knew there was more to come...

MR. Z.: BEHOLD!

MR. Z.: It's the greatest thing I've ever eaten (or at least Top 10 -- I don't know if anything can top Sweet Lorraine's or that mac & cheese grilled cheese sandwich I had once at Bagger Dave's)!

I'm not going to bother creating a color palette for that abomination. I'm still not sure if he sent me a photo of the tater tot pizza or a closeup of the frostbitten foot of that guy from the book "Into Thin Air." I will give him credit for conserving plate space, however. The last time he had pasta, he had a side of pizza and a separate side of tater tots. Now he's consolidating his pizza/potato courses into one handy, congealed "potizzo." See? College really does expose you to new things! [SFX: projectile vomiting]

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 015 and 016

9.12.15 Brunch

MR. Z.: Here's brunch, since I woke up at 11 AM today and didn't leave for Commons until 12:30. Off-brand Lucky Charms and some really flavorless French toast (I couldn't find any syrup, which made me sad).

This meal's color palette:

Try new "Lucky Chums," with brown stars, beige moons and khaki clovers! I can't really criticize this meal, actually -- the boy's in college and it's a Saturday morning. What better time to eat knock-off Diabete-O's with a glass of Sunny D? The syrup-less French toast is a little pathetic, though. Without syrup, I'm pretty sure it's just called "toast." The color palette tool didn't quite pick up the day-glo hues of the marshmallows. That's okay -- I'm pretty sure they're undigestible, so maybe he can take a picture of them in his stool tomorrow.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 013 and 014

9.11.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: Some pasta with basil sauce(?), grilled cheese and finally got some tots. Napoleon would be proud. This is a very earthly-toned meal. Also, look: it's PLAIN MILK!

This meal's color palette:

If Reagan were still president, his ketchup could count as a vegetable, but he's not, so this meal counts as one, giant carbo-rrito. He's choking down a meal with a color palette that is identical to the interior of my mom's old, mid-80s Buick Skylark. And like that car, if he keeps eating like this, he's going to end up with a seriously leaky intake manifold gasket and will definitely have some troubles passing emissions testing. I recommend downing a bottle of this after each meal:

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 011 and 012

9.10.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: Very good (if a little dry) turkey burger with barbecue sauce today. Other than that, pizza. I like my routine of "Lame Lunches"/"Don't-Worry-I-Haven't-Been-Brainwashed-Even-Though-I'm-Eating-Vegetable-Dinners."

This meal's color palette:

The color palette is basically a cross-section of a box of Neapolitan ice cream. Which may actually be more nutritious than this meal. Looks like there's been a bit of a beige, carbo-starchy backslide since last night's side-salad dinner. I have to remember, however, that until he left for college, this was the kid who literally (and I do actually mean literally) ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a bag of chips and a bottle of chocolate milk EVERY FUCKING DAY SINCE HE STARTED TAKING LUNCHES TO SCHOOL. Is the above meal a nutritional step up from that? Let's call it a draw.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 009 and 010

9.9.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: I woke up at 11 AM and ate a bowl of cereal, then got to lunch at noon and wasn't too hungry... but I still ended up getting this. Evidently, Commons was feeling experimental today, which explains this slightly questionable "scallion and asiago cheese" pizza. A solid 6/10, though. The turkey sandwich was good, featuring lettuce this time.

This meal's color palette:

It's heartening to see the lettuce on his sandwich. I really think the pressure of this blog is steering him toward a healthier diet. In the 16 years he lived at home, I couldn't get him to ingest a piece of lettuce to save his life but a few snarky posts on social media and, bam, he's practically a vegan. Even the kid across from him in the Joy Division "Unknown Pleasures" t-shirt approves. Could the "unknown pleasures" have been vegetables all along, Mr. Z? We'll have to see if "Love [of vegetables] Will Tear [You] Apart... [from pizza]."

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 008

9.8.15 Dinner

MR. Z.: I don't know why I'm doing this to myself. I feel like all I need to say is the fact that it was Taco Tuesday tonight, AND the geode cookies were still around. And no, that's not coffee, it's Pepsi in a paper cup because all the good cups were gone. I may eat nothing but salads for the rest of the week.

This meal's color palette*:

*There seems to be some sort of bias toward the brown end of the spectrum in this palette tool. The granny smith was completely underrepresented in these swatches. (Unless the color palette tool secretly knows that Mr. Z didn't actually eat that apple and merely placed it on the plate as a healthy diversion.)

I love the fact that, even though it's Taco Tuesday, that didn't stop him from adding two tiny slices of pizza as a sort of amuse bouche. It's like his garnish. "Once you've plated your meal, it's fun to dress up your presentation with a little pizza adornment. The doughy beige of the crust and the sickly wax-like anemia of the congealed mozzarella will really help your main course pop!"

¡Olé!

What Mr. Z Eats: Meals 006, 007A and 007B

9.7.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: I was hungry as hell and needed something more substantial than pizza, so I made a turkey sandwich. it was a great idea.

ME: That's a sad looking sammy.

MR. Z.: Nah, it had LOTS of turkey and some cheese. This is just a somewhat top-down view.

This meal's color palette:

9.7.15 Dinner A

Apparently, Mr. Z's roommate's parents were in town and took them to Taco Bell for dinner.

MR. Z.: After carefully scanning the menu for anything with the word "chicken," I decided on this Chicken Quesarrito, which was actually really good. It featured some liquidy cheese (?) and some decent rice, and all in all it was pretty damn great. Those strange orb-shaped objects in the bag were called "Cap'n Crunch Delights" and probably gave me diabetes.

This meal's color palette:

The story doesn't end there, though, dear reader. Not content with the potential diarrheal monsoon that was most certainly heading toward his southernmost port, Mr. Z had additional dinner plans in store...

9.7.15 Dinner B

MR. Z.: An hour later, I saw some cool people so I was like, "Hey! Cool people!" and headed with them to the Commons. There was no pizza, which made me a very, very sad boy... so I got the chili. I then got some cookies at the cookie bar and they were VERY hard. It was like biting into a geode.

This meal's color palette:

In case you're keeping score, that's a turkey sandwich, an apple, a Quesarrhea, a sack of Cap'n's sugar-nards, a bowl of chili, an orange and a couple of liters of Coke, orange pop and some red liquid. At this point, diabetes is the least of his worries. I hope he has a couple of tarps handy because tonight is going to be a craptastrophe. We just paid for his first semester of college and there's no way we'll be able to afford the new rectum he's going to need after passing this abomination. I advised him to sleep in the shower tonight.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 005

 9.6.15 Dinner

MR. Z.: Dinner. Commons wasn't open, so we finally dug into the frozen pizzas in our fridge. It looks a bit... well-done, but it was surprisingly good. (Not pictured: Cherry Coke I got from the vending machine downstairs.) I'm beginning to fear for my health -- I think I may have already gained the Freshman 15 (or maybe 50). Let's hope that broccoli from yesterday is still working wonders on me.

This meal's color palette*:

*I'm pretty sure this is also the color palette for the film, "American Hustle."

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 004

9.6.15 Lunch

MR. Z.: This is my "lunch" (i.e. - we ran out of breakfast in the dorm so I had to go to Commons), featuring [roommate's] forearm. It's obviously a very single-colored meal but off-brand Cap'n Crunch is really much better than it should be. The orange juice was pretty watery, though. It was disappointing.

This meal's color palette*:

* The bowl, table and roommate's arm lend way more chromatic diversity to the meal than it truly deserves.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 003

9.5.15 Dinner

MR Z: Wasn't expecting much with the chicken, but it turned out to be good as HELL. One of the biggest surprises of the century. Some of the fries were amazing and the perfect level of crispiness, but others were sadly moist.

*new feature* This meal's color palette:

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 002

Lunch 9.5.15 marks the first appearance of a VEGETABLE! Broccoli, atop a bed of lightly fried potatoes, with a side of pizza, half of a grilled cheese sandwich and an apple. This plate is a true standoff between blockage forming carb-starchery and colon-clearing roughage. Not only might the introduction of fruits and vegetables help Mr. Z stave off scurvy, he may just forestall a potential bout of rickets. Only time, and more meal photos, will tell.

What Mr. Z Eats: Meal 001

Mr. Z is in college now. I told him to send me a photo of each of his meals. He's finally getting around to it. Here is "Dinner 9.4.15." Looks like two pieces of pizza, pasta with red sauce, an orange and a glass of red juice. (The orange is only there because I told him to start eating some fruit or he'd get scurvy.) He said this is basically what he's been eating every dinner. I'm thinking that if he doesn't start mixing some Metamucil into that juice, he's not going to shit until winter break.

Eff You Muddah, Eff You Fadduh...

I feel so horrible. What have we done? We just dropped Miss O off at a two-week music camp and I feel like the worst parent in the world.

She wanted to go. She begged us during the school year -- "Pleeeeeease? It sounds so fun! Emma's parents are letting her go!" She even got a partial scholarship. It seemed too good to be true -- one of the Crabbykids, voluntarily leaving home for two weeks?! Un-fucking-precedented!

Of course, as the zero hour approached, her doubts started creeping in. Would she make any friends? Could she handle being away from home for so long? Would the food suck? Why the shit were we making her go?!?!?!

So we attempted to talk her down. Yes, she would make friends -- she's always able to do that very easily, wherever she goes. Staying away for two weeks will be no problem -- she went for seven days to that shitty camp near Grand Haven a couple of years ago and she just got back from a different music camp for five days in June. Piece of fucking cake. Yes, the food would suck. And we were making her go because, 1, she begged us to send her there and, B, we already shelled out the dough and there are no refunds, so suck it up.

We drove her out there yesterday and the camp looked pretty great. It's in the woods, near a lake, lots of girls who look just like her walking around with their way-too-long hair and hipster glasses. True, the camp is forcing her to wear a uniform every day (light blue polo, dark shorts) but I kinda get that -- take the pressures of fashion one-upsmanship (one-upsgirlship?) out of the equation. The counselors had that classic combination of spunky pluck and musician-y nerdiness. 'Twas a perfect stew of campy good-timiness.

We walked around, visited the camp store, got some ice cream, met the cabin-mates -- it all seemed to be going swimmingly. Of course, we realized once we got there that we forgot Miss O's pillow, which sucked ass. Nothing that a mini ass-ripper of a round trip excursion to Target couldn't remedy.

And then it was time to say our goodbyes. Cue the waterworks. Miss O just melted and started sobbing. She didn't want to be there, she wasn't going to make any friends, by the time camp ends the summer is going to be over, 11 days was way too long, WHY THE SHIT WERE WE MAKING HER STAY THERE?!?!?!

What can you say to your whimpering kid right before you abandon them for two weeks? I mean, as I stood there trying to explain to her that everything was going to be fine and that camp would be over before she knew it, I flashed back to my camp days. My parents shipped me off to northern Minne-fucking-sota for FOUR WEEKS every summer, starting at age 10. TEN!!! What the shit?! Remember the saddest letter ever written? I was fucking miserable and it pretty much scarred me for life. Scars that have been explored by no less than two different therapists, mind you. And now, apparently, I'm paying it forward.

But there's nothing I can do now. All I can do is wait for 11 days to pass and see if she survives. That and write letters. Letters that I'm making sure don't paint home life as remotely interesting, fun or comfy. Letters that don't use the words "miss you" at all. Letters that don't allude to me, the Old Lady and Mr. Z doing anything together, as a group, in an enjoyable way. Letters that don't mention the dog.

Man, I hope she's having a good time.

Eyes Not Shut

What kind of sick fuck invented the Sleep Study? “Hey, how ‘bout I cement a buncha shit to your face and then watch you not sleep for nine hours?” Sign me the fuck up, assbag!

I’m getting ahead of myself. First, I should explain why I ever agreed to participate in such a pointless pigfuck. I think the answer is that, once again, I listened to a doctor. I’ve gotta remember to stop doing that.

So, I’ve been having this issue with asthma that just kinda came out of nowhere about a year and a half ago, and I’ve been to a succession of doctors who get more and more specialized and less and less able to explain what the shit is going on.

I started my quest by visiting an allergist. Allergists are really good at telling you that you’re allergic to everything, giving you weekly injections and handing out an assload of nose sprays and inhalers. That’s basically all they know how to do. They couldn’t really explain what was going on with me (surprise), so they sent me to a pulmonologist.

I visited the pulmonologist. Pulmonologists are really good at explaining how allergists don’t know what the fuck they’re doing, ordering a bunch of breathing tests and handing out a different assload of inhalers. They couldn’t explain what was going on with me (shocking) but they thought I should maybe go to a gastroenterologist to talk about reflux.

I visited the gastroenterologist. Now, gastroenterologists, much like their area of focus, are assholes. They’re really good at bad-mouthing allergists and pulmonologists and handing out Prilosec. That’s literally all they do. The “doctor” actually said, “Well, there’s really nothing I can do, other than tell you to take two pills a day instead of the one you’re already taking.” How many years of med school did it take for you to learn that brilliant, nuanced treatment, ya worthless turdcake?

Finally, I was sent to a different pulmonologist in that mecca of diagnostic medicine… Ann Arbor. Now, that’s akin to venturing from Mayberry to Raleigh. Actually, more like going from Hooterville to Pixley. Needless to say, my expectations were in the shitter. The crooked, outdoor shitter built by Ralph and Alf Monroe.

The new pulmonologist was a nice guy, mind you. I’ll give them that, all the doctors I’ve seen are… nice (except for the gastroenterologist. He’s just a douchespigot.). This new guy put me on a new inhaler… check. He had me do a breathing test… check. He prescribed me a different nose spray… check. And he told me to go get a sleep study. DING-DING-DING! (See second paragraph.) I guess I agreed to do it because… well, because it was something different. I had already submitted to every other moronic fucking diagnostic test invented. Why not toss a sleep study log onto the fire?

So, on a Thursday night, I drove out to the sleep study building that’s situated in the middle of some random farm on the outskirts of Ann Arbor. Why is it on a farm? I guess a bullshit science like “sleep studying” needs a steady stream of fresh bullshit to keep it running at maximum bullshit level. Anywhich, they buzzed me in and I filled out an assload of paperwork absolving them of any liability on the highly likely chance they accidentally killed me in my sleep. Then they took me to my room. Now, the brochure they sent me said I’d be spending the night in a “special hotel room.” In reality, it looked a lot like the room I’ll probably find myself in when I’m just about to die. Bed, tray, TV on the wall, nurse button, safety bars, monitors and a big ol’ box of latex gloves.

The minute I walked into that room, I knew I wasn’t going to sleep a fucking wink.

A man nurse and a lady nurse made me sit in a chair and then they proceeded to tape, stick and hot glue gun a shitload of wires to my head, face, chest and legs. I lost count but I’m guessing there were, say, 9712 wires adhered to my person. Oh, and the lady nurse was new, so the man nurse had to keep explaining to her that what she was doing was really wrong, all while unsticking and resticking the wires, adding an extra hour or so to the joyous proceedings.

When they were done, they asked if I had to go to the bathroom and, realizing that that might be my last chance to drain it before they plugged me into the wall, I said that, indeed, I did. So they wrapped all the wires around my neck like some sort of robot ascot and I shuffled into the bathroom like… well, like an ascot-wearing robot. I managed to whiz a bit but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get up at 3:00 in the AM like I am wont to do, so I winky-tinked some more. And then I sat there and thought about waterfalls, rain on a tin roof and garden hoses until I peed some more. I peed until air came out, basically. Then I shuffled back into my death closet.

By this time, the man nurse had left, so the newbie lady nurse plugged me in (not a euphemism, unfortunately). She told me that I could watch TV for a while and that it would shut off automatically in about a half an hour. Then the lights would go off and I would drift off to a robotic slumberland. Then she said, “Oh, and if you need anything, just talk because we’ll be listening all night and that camera on the ceiling will by videoing you. Sleep tight!”

That cinched it – I definitely would not be sleeping one wink’s worth of sleep that night.

And I didn’t. Okay, maybe I got a couple of hours of winks but that’s it. It was literally me just lying there, sighing heavily, trying to will myself to sleep, which is about as effective as trying to will myself to grow thicker eyebrows. And if you’ve seen my eyebrows lately… well, lemme know because I sure as shit haven’t seen them. Fuck you, Peter Gallagher.

And that’s pretty much the saga. There’s really no revelatory ending to this pathetic tale. I struggled through my two hours of sleep and then the lights came on at 6:00 AM and they told me to get the fuck out. I haven’t heard anything since. I can’t imagine what the pulmonologist is going to make of the results. He’ll probably say something like, “Well, I still don’t know where your asthma is coming from but we now know that you have trouble falling asleep when people glue shit to your face and force you to sleep in artificial death-rooms.”

If he recommends that I go see a sleep doctor, I’m gonna cut the fucker.
